Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
